Note:

Samuel was the first person of the Gwinn name to settle in Summers County and that he with the Graham family came together from the same section in Wales (Samuel was the son of Robert Gwin Jr. who immigrated to the US from Wales before 1744) to Calf Pasture River,Va. than moving across the Alleghenies into Greenbrier Co. near Lowell. His emigration gradually proceeded westward after the danger from local indians subsided at the termination of the Revolutionary War in 1776. Samuel Gwinn Sr. was the original ancestor of all the Gwinns in this section of the country. The grants or patents of lands from the Commonwealth of Virginia to Samuel Gwinn showed the spelling of his name as Guin. The first grant of land to Samuel by the Governor of the Commonwealth in 1796 was for a tract ofland on the Greenbrier River on which Andrew Gwinn, with his son James resided.Samuel was the father of a numer of siblings, the oldest being Samuel Jr. settled at Lowell but later moved to Lick Creek purchasing the old Claypool and other patented lands at Green Sulpher Springs and surrounding lands. Samuel was inCapt. Andrew Lockridge's company, Augusta Co. Militia during Lord Dunmore's War (1774). He participated in the Battle of Point Pleasant against the ShawneeIndians led by Chief Cornstalk. After his first wife died, he married Elizabeth Lockridge, the widow of Robert Graham. Samuel had two children by his first wifewhose name is unknown. They were Samuel Jr. and Moses.
