Robert, the pogenitor of this branch of the Gwin (Gwinn) Family, came to Virginia before 1744. He was born in Wales, British Isles. In 1746, he was appointed Constable at the head of the Great Calfpasture River in Augusta County, Va..He was allowed a certificate for land as a result of military service, which showshe participated in the early Colonial Wars in Captin William Preston's companyof rangers in 1758. In 1744, he bought 544 acres lying on both sides of the Calfpasture River from James Patton and John Lewis. In 1762, for 5 Shillings, he deeded to his son Robert Gwin Jr., 241 acres. Robert Sr. married Jean Kincaid, daughter of David Kincaid and Winnifred of Albemarle Co.,Va.. The Kincaid family is ofthe Scottish clan. David Kincaid, brother of the then Laird, took part in the unsuccessful Stuart Rebellion in 1715 and was in consequence forced to leave Scotland. He came to Spotsylvania Co.,Va. where he took up land with GeorgeRobinson; later moved to Albemarle Co., then to Augusta Co. and finally to Bath Co. where he died. He arrrived in America shortly after 1715 and was an earlysettler in Virginia. He built the first Augusta co. jail. Among his children were Jean who married Robert Gwin and Isabella who married James Lockridge. Robert Gwinhad three brothers: John whose wife's name was Alice, William and Patrick whose wife's name was Janet.
